Officer of the Month
June, 2010
Officer Ted Latiak
On June 21, 2010 just before 3:00 AM, Officer Latiak was on patrol in the central business district. While checking the Grass Island Park and Marina, he observed a vehicle which had been parked haphazardly. Officer Latiak investigated the vehicle and found a citizen slumped down behind the driver’s seat. The driver of the vehicle displayed signs of having difficulty breathing and was unconscious. In fact, the citizen was in dire need of emergency medical attention.
Officer Latiak contacted headquarters and had the Paramedics dispatched to the scene while he and another officer provided basic life saving techniques. The citizen was transported to the Emergency Room where he was treated and ultimately admitted for continuing care by medical professionals.
“One of the traditional tactics used by the police is the use of continuous highly visible patrols during which the officers remains watchful for any disturbances of the peace. The term Police Officer and Law Enforcement Officer are synonymous in most citizens’ minds. However, one of the core functions of a Police Officer is to protect life. On that night, Officer Latiak’s adherence to this tried and true method of delivering police services resulted in the preservation of a life and not just the enforcement of the law. Officer Latiak is commended for his dedication to duty.”
