Not sure, but I believe it’s “wail on it.” Which makes a little more sense. As in, “wailing on your guitar.” I think that’s where the phrase comes from. Maybe eventually later it also picked up the meaning, “hitting something hard.”
Maybe CP (your “other professional photographer” above) is a better source – I bet this is West Coast slang!
