On Sunday, nearly 200 people biked through Greenwich to raise money for a cure of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) including a team of Greenwich Police Officers (”Team Greenwich Police”) who were “riding for Roger”: Sgt. Roger Petrone, who has been diagnosed with ALS.
The rain held off, and the bikers trekked up the Johns Street hill in back-country Greenwich shortly after Noon to a rest area at the Audubon before heading down Riversville Rd. to Sherwood and on to SUNY Purchase, towards their finish line in White Plains. The bikers were lead through Greenwich by two GPD motorcycle officers.
According to Lt. Tim Berry, head of the GPD Traffic Division who was overseeing the operation at the Johns Street - Riversville Rd. intersection, nearly all of the 185 bikers who started had make it to Greenwich. By the time the bikers reached the Audubon, they had peddled 81 miles, having started at New Haven.
On hand to cheer the bikers up the hill were a score of supporters ringing white cow bells (sold for $5 to raise funds for the cause) — foremost among the supporter was Sgt. Petrone, clad in the red, white and blue biker’s shirt of the Ride of Roger GPD bike team. The Glenville Fire Department dispatched a truck for the event accompanied by police Lt. Jim Heavey, who does double duty with the volunteer fire department. ALS volunteers had a tent in which they provided bananas, oranges and water for the bikers.
ALS is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, which, in turn, affect the movement of voluntary muscles. Donations can be made directly to the ALS TDI at www.Tristatetrek.com.
