One day after our Greenwich resident, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal recommended that the State Ethics Commission drop its investigation of the Catholic church’s activities at the Capitol, the Commission did just that.
The ethics agency was investigating claims that the Catholic church was a lobbyist who should have registered as such, when it paid for buses to bring church members to Hartford to meet with their legislators so the parishioners could explain their opposition to legislation regulating the financial affairs of the Catholic church.
The decision to end the investigation came after an hour and a half executive session of the State Ethics Commission. The investigation is being challenged in federal court by the Diocese of Bridgeport. The Diocese received support in its suit against the Ethics agency from an unlikely ally, the ACLU. The Diocese has yet to announce if it will drop the suit now that the investigation has been called off.
