“10-13″ is the universal police code for an officer in need of assistance. When police hear that dreaded code on their radio, they drop everything and rush to the scene.
Likewise, the police, who are really a big “family,” come to the aid of their own when there is in need by throwing a “10-13 Party” to raise funds for distressed cops and their families.
Well, there certainly is a need for one of our Greenwich’s Finest. Recently retired Neighborhood Resource Office, Antonio Rivera can use help. He has been a Greenwich Police Officer since 1989. His health has declined dramatically during the past year, forcing his early retirement. Officer Rivera is nearly completely blind and his kidneys have begun to fail. He is married and the father of two children.
So, the GPD Silver Shield Association is holding a 10-13 party for Officer Rivera. And will it be some party — the lower Greenwich Avenue will be closed for event. Three taverns in the neighborhood, McDuff’s, Sundown Saloon, and Thataway Cafe, will provide the food and drink. There will be tee-shirts, raffle tickets, and live music.
The party, open to the public, will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2009. There is a $10 cover charge.
