A Mother’s Christmas Present

One of the parental passage-points, I guess, is spending your first big holiday (Christmas, Hanukah) apart from your child. I have yet to experience that minor trauma, but I am reminded of it by one mom in our Greenwich (a prominent Greenwich denizen, by the way) who doing something about spending this Christmas half-a-world away from her son.

Her son is a U.S. Navy SEAL serving our country in Afghanistan.   In typical motherly love, she is not concerned about the emptiness she might feel on December 25th. She is concerned, instead, about her son’s void. She writes, “It’s always hard to be away from home for Christmas, but I can’t imagine that the wilds of Afghanistan project any type of Christmas spirit at all.” So this mom is on a mission to help create a bit of that holiday spirit for him. She is asking friends, neighbors and other in our Greenwich to consider adding her son to their Christmas card list. Some locally are even sending small packages of treats, gifts, personal notes, pictures, and family newsletters to this serviceman.

This grassroots effort is gaining steam – so much so that there is a bit of concern about security. Accordingly, at the mom’s request, I am not posting the name and address of the family or SEAL.  But, if you are interested in helping this mom brighten this serviceman’s Christmas, contact me at OurGreenwich.Trotta@gmail.com and I will forward your request to this mom.
