An enthusiastic crowd gathered at 205 Railroad Avenue last night to celebrate the official opening of the Democratic campaign headquarters. As State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal observed, “I’ve been going to headquarters openings for two decades and there is more energy in this room than I’ve ever seen.”
Blumenthal reminded the crowd that if they needed any motivation to work hard on the behalf of their candidates over the next 30 days, they should just think about the potential effect of a McCain win on the makeup of the Supreme Court, civil Liberties and warrantless wiretapping, at which point State Senate President Don Williams Jr (D- Brooklyn) added “or the thought of Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency.”
Ed Krumeich, who is involved in a hotly contested race for the 151st district in the House against former RTC Chairman Fred Camillo, told supporters the next thirty days would be crucial. Krumeich, who lost to retiring incumbent Dolly Powers by a mere 132 votes two years ago, hopes to be the first Democrat to represent Greenwich in the Statehouse since 1912.
Jim Himes, running for Congress against 21 year incumbent Chris Shays, spoke about the need to return to return to essential American beliefs and values after eight years of the Bush Administration. “Each and every one of you is going to fight for your country over the next four weeks,” Himes said.
The gathered Democrats seemed ready for the fight. Perhaps, because, as Lex Paulson, Fairfield County organizer for the Obama campaign observed, “There’s no-one who fights harder against prevailing winds than Democrats in Greenwich.”
