I was called to the 10:30PM dark scene in Riverside to a small crowd of Riverside residents who thought they were seeing UFO’s in the Southern Sky.
Last Summer Greenwich residents brought to my attention lights in the sky over the Indian Harbor Yacht Club area of Greenwich.
Last Summer I made a call to a friend who said that her neighbor was launching dozens of Chinese Lanterns for a birthday celebration.
Tonight I drove to the Riverside scene and witnessed the phenomena myself. The lights were convincingly characteristic in an unidentifiable category. Bright white light about the size of a very very close planet darted for a quarter second in generally straight lines. The light would appear and disappear quickly. It was convincing enough for me to investigate further. I took someone with me to look at it closer. I thought it would be in the area of Tod’s Point. I didn’t get that far. My moonroof was already open to look into the sky as I approached the Mobil Gas Station at the intersection of Route 1 and Sheephill when I discovered the now IFO’s. Nighthawks flying through the powerful upward light beams from the Chase Bank. At least three Nighthawk (Birds) were darting through the intensely bright lights. My guess is that the birds are hunting moths and other insects that are attracted to the super bright light.
From 150 yards…visual details that would describe the image as a bird are not there for a human eye to grasp…the intense light shining on the light underside of the bird looks like a ‘UFO’ from a distance.
When I went back to report my findings…the crowd quickly disperse in disappointment.
We’re not alone…there are birds up there…and maybe something else…but tonight probably just Chasing birds.
