At a crowded town hall meeting, Lin Lavery announced this morning that she would be challenging incumbent Peter Tesei for the First Selectman’s office. Attorney General Dick Blumenthal and Congressman Jim Himes, as well as former First Selectmen Dick Bergstresser and Roger Pearson and selectman Penny Monahan were on hand to lend support.
This should be an interesting race. Two years ago, Lavery, a newcomer to the political scene but someone who had been extremely active on the volunteer circuit, won the second highest number of votes in the selectman’s race over longtime officeholder Peter Crumbine.
“Why run now?” is a question Lavery said people are asking her. Her answer: ”Why wait until better times? Difficult times need strong leadership.”
Greenwich has never been an easy town for Democrats, but Lavery is a very strong candidate with proven bipartisan support. She could definitely give Peter Tesei a run for his money.
