The Roman Catholic bishop for Fairfield County (the Diocese of Bridgeport) will not attend or support a local event honoring Kerry Kennedy, because of Ms. Kennedy’s role as a vocal pro-choice advocate. The boycott is even more significant because the event is sponsored by Sacred Heart University, where Bishop Lori is the Chairman of the Board.
The announcement came as a short note on page 10 of the current edition of the Diocesan newspaper, the Fairfield Catholic, at the bottom of a longer article about the storm of protest surrounding Notre Dame University’s decision to honor President Obama.
The Bishop’s spokesman, who is currently abroad, told me that it would be difficult to get a further response from Bishop Lori until after this, the holiest days of the Catholic calendar (theTriduum).
More details on the significance of the decision by Bishop Lori (a courageous one, in my opinion) can be found on the website of a Catholic college ministry named the Cardinal Newman Society.
