This excerpt from President Bush’s farewell address last night, in my opinion, sums up the Bush Doctrine:
“As we address these challenges – and others we cannot foresee tonight – America must maintain our moral clarity. I have often spoken to you about good and evil. This has made some uncomfortable. But good and evil are present in this world, and between the two there can be no compromise. Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere.
“Freeing people from oppression and despair is eternally right. This Nation must continue to speak out for justice and truth. We must always be willing to act in their defense and to advance the cause of peace.”
We can debate the implementation of those acts to defend and advance peace. America can even choose to go down a different path to peace. But we can ill-afford to forget that our goal is peace.
I, for one, am not ashamed to say that I believe America has received special blessings and has a special mission. We must not choose to ignore the difference between good and evil. We must be mindful that the ends never justify the means. If we choose to compromise with evil in the name of “peace” we are betraying our patrimony, but far worse, we are betraying ourselves.
President Bush made many mistakes during his two terms, but one thing he is not mistaken about is that moral relativism is flawed.
