I was walking in downtown and a stranger asked me if he had to put money in the parking meters today. I didn’t know the answer. Almost all the meters on the street had been fed. But, after all, it is Veterans’ Day — a federal (but not national) holiday.
Veterans’ Day is one of those “quasi-holidays” — public schools are closed; some private schools aren’t. The stock market is open; the bond market is closed. Some banks are open; others are not. No mail, but a regular schedule on Metro-North.
Well, must one put money in the meters? A call to the non-emergency Greenwich Police (622-8000), revealed that the meters are free today. (And you don’t even have to be a veteran!)
