Is the local media bias?

I was with some smart people yesterday, one or two of whom suggested that they and their friends thought the local media covering Greenwich had a “right leaning” or conservative bias.  I was nonplused because I have generally heard the opposite viewpoint — that the local media is left-leaning.

There is much talk of America being polarized — of citizens living in there self-created “media bubbles” by choosing the sources of their news which reflect and reinforce their own worldview.  The suggestion is that one can choose to live in a “Fox News – NY Post bubble” or an “MSNBC – NY Times bubble” (or tune out everything).

This is not new.  In President Lincoln’s day nearly every town had a Republican or Whig newspaper and a Democratic newspaper.  The papers were unabashedly partisan, and some even reflected their leanings in their name.  (See, for example, the history of the Press Democrat.)

So, in terms of my surprise about a left-leaning perception of Greenwich media by some, perhaps it was the result of me associating generally with allies living in the same “bubble” as I do, and the people I was with yesterday associating most frequently with cohabitants of their own opposing media bubble.

For fun, I thought  I’d conduct a non-scientific survey of the readers of OurGreenwich on this question.  You can take the anonymous survey here: GREENWICH MEDIA BIAS SURVEY.
